News Visualizations

Here are two great news visualization I came across at Jennifer Dorman´s blog.

1.- One is a widget that shows World headline news from NPR through an interactive globe

2.- The other one is Newsmap, an application that according to their site “visually reflects the constantly changing landscape of the Google News news aggregator.” Visit newsmap at http://marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/newsmap.cfm

From the Principal’s Desk: Last email from Mrs. Howard, Week of June 9th, 2008

Published by palliende under Announcements

Good Morning,

This email is the last “Week of” for the 2007-2008 school year, my last Monday communication with you, and my last week as Principal of the ISC and RHS-HH. I find it very difficult to face the fact that this is my last few days as being part of this school has been an amazing experience for me. It is not the school that is the important but all of you, our students and their families.  It is the work we have done together to create a school environment focused on learning and excellence.  I reflect on our three years together and see many accomplishments and good times.  We have celebrated and we have cried together as we’ve written the chapters in the book on education at Hartman and the ISC.  This current chapter is ending on Friday with a new one beginning on Monday.  The new chapter will bring enriching opportunities for us all.  As I write this last Monday email, I want to thank you all for your support, your friendship and love. I am honored to have worked with you.

A couple thoughts for you…

“The only limits are as always of vision.”  James Broughton

“The greatest sweetener of human life is Friendship.”  Joseph Addison

“Shoot for the moon, Even if you miss it, you will land among the starts.”

From the Principal’s Desk: Week of May 27, 2008

Published by palliende under Announcements

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to watch the full documentary “2 Million Minutes“.

Several key factors were loudly spoken in the documentary:

·          American students are not globally aware

·          Strong minds and discoveries happen everywhere

·          Students in China and India view education as a means to economic opportunities

·          American students score higher in self confidence than any other student group in the world

·          American students work as hard as other students in the world.  Often there work is attached to jobs outside of school and co-curricular activities

Concluding thoughts to ponder
American children are as smart and capable as other children of the world and are frequently viewed as having all the things that others in the world want.  Children in other parts of the world are willing to work extremely hard to gain placement in US college and universities as they want what American children have.  Education is their means of economic prosperity and a better life.

Events of the Week:

1.  ISC Seniors:  Finals begin Wednesday, period 4 and 5, conclude Thursday, periods 1,2,and 3.  Graduation Practices is Friday following the Senior Breakfast.

2.  OLY Luau – Friday,  short assembly at the end of the day.  Schedule is forthcoming.

3.   ISC Graduation:  Tuesday, June 3rd 7:00 at South Sister, DCFG.  This is an exciting time for students and parents.  Our work together is to make it memorable and respectful.

4.  Finals:  This week our ISC seniors are taking finals, next Monday and Tuesday Global Academy seniors take finals, the following week finals are scheduled on  Wednesday, June 11th periods 1,3, and 5 and Thursday, June 12th period 2 and 4.

Once again,  Thank you for the Welcome Back poster.

Have a wonderful educationally focused week.

From the Principal’s Desk: Week of April 28th…

Published by palliende under Announcements

Good Morning,

Leave a Legacy” is the sixth and final directive from The Janitor.  Everyday you come to work to teach and students come to learn.  In reality you give a gift of knowledge that will transcend high school.

Many times this year, we’ve talked about building futures, “One World, One Dream, One Future”. Our future is the legacy you leave in the minds of the students who sit in your classrooms, come to your attendance window, swim at the pool or research in the library.  Our school will leave a legacy.

Prom this Saturday was part of a legacy.  The event was exceptional.  It seemed that students had a great time and all things went very well.  Two of our students were honored as King and Queen.  Stephen Rigsby and Samantha Ryals were the honored guest.  Congratulations to the King Stephen and Queen Samantha.

I want to thank Juanita Clarno for selling Prom ticket here at Hartman.  Her work honored the Hartman students and made it ease for them to purchase Prom tickets.

Important Information:
The posting for the Hartman administrative position closed on Friday, April 25th.  Interviews are to occur this week.

Oregon’s stand on exit exams.  As you have read in Jon’s email, Oregon is very likely to require exit exams for high school graduation.  In the proposal students may have options other than a written exam to demonstrate proficiency. The ISC has assessment exam already in place so the addition of required exit exam should be of minimal impact.  I would encourage Denise Roberts and the new administrator to work closely with the State to accept IB exams.  The GA has implemented a Senior Project which could with development become a proficiency exam.
